Overview


With its main campus located in Darwin, the capital of the Northern Territory, Charles Darwin University is abounding in youthful vigour from the wet tropics in the north to the arid deserts in the south.

The other campuses are at Palmerston, Alice Springs and Katherine, offering students exposure to one of the most biologically diverse regions on earth and to the ancient indigenous Aboriginal cultures of the Northern territory.

The University offers its students high-quality, nationally accredited and internationally recognised qualifications gained through study in small classes with personalised teaching, a multi-sector teaching curriculum and freedom from the constraints and restrictions of tradition.


Location


Charles Darwin University is located in the Northern Territory of Australia. Its main campus is in the capital, Darwin, and its other campuses are in Alice Springs, Palmerston and Katherine.

The Northern Territory ranges from wet tropical ecosystems in the north to arid deserts in the South, around the Alice. Darwin has a wet season from November to April, with temperatures from 20 – 34 degrees C, and a dry season, from May to October, with temperatures from 15 – 31 degrees C.

Alice Springs, further south in the heart of Australia, is set in a desert landscape and famed for the nearby Uluru (Ayers Rock). Darwin is a youthful, multicultural and cosmopolitan city and the University makes full use of the diverse environments and cultures within which it finds its settings. This diversity is reflected in its teaching and its research activities and the energy and enthusiasm that characterise life in the Northern Territory.


Campuses


Casuarina campus is the University’s main campus, located in Darwin, 12 kilometres from the CBD. The campus is set within tropical gardens with air-conditioned facilities, including student accommodation, library, lecture theatres and research laboratories, gym and cafes, and various outdoor sporting facilities. It is no far from the beach and close to public transport connecting it with the city and suburbs. This campus offers most of the University’s courses.

Palmerston campus is 20 kilometres form Darwin, close to Palmerston city centre. This is a state-of-the-art facility which houses the School of Hospitality and Tourism and Conservation and Land Management courses, with a training restaurant, a training hair dressing and beauty therapy salon, and virtual travel agency. The campus has lecture halls and 24-hourr computer labs with up-to-date electronic resources for teaching and learning. This campus offers a limited range of courses.

Alice Springs campus is set in the desert in Australia’s centre and boast magnificent landscape and modern facilities, including a training restaurant, which is open to the public, and provides tourism and hospitality training, a vineyard, café, hairdresser and gym. This campus provides postgraduate research facilities and includes extensive vocational training and up-to-date electronic learning resources. This campus offers a limited range of courses.

Katherine campus lies 314 kilometres south of Darwin, and specialises in horticulture and agriculture for VET, for traineeships and for apprenticeships, including jackeroo and jillaroo training.Its teaching facilities include cattle handling facilities and stables, residential accommodation and state-of-the-art teaching facilities. Students can also gain first hand experience on a large commercial cattle station. This campus offers a limited number of courses.

English Courses


The University offers English for Academic Purposes and General English in conjunction with the ACL Darwin English Centre. An AA Education counsellor can give you more information about accessing these courses.

 
 

Entry Requirements

English language requirements:

undergraduate admission generally requires an overall minmum of 6.0  with no band less than 5; postgraduate studies require an overall minimum of 6.5, with no band less than 6.0.

Academic requirements:

-  undergraduate admission generally requires the successful completion of the equivalent of year 12 studies; postgraduate admission requires the successful completion of of recognised Bachelor degree and/or relevant work experience, with a recognised honours degree required for postgraduate research.

Enrolment dates


The University has two semesters each academic year. Application dates will depend on the country you are applying from.

Semester 1 : November 15 the previous year for some countries, or October 15 the previous year for others.

Semester 2 : May 15  the same year for some countries, or April 15 the same year for other countries.

Postgraduate research deadlines are generally six monrths before your proposed commencement.

Student activities


The Darwin campus host the CDU sports association that involves students, staff and the local community in a range of activities and team sports. The local community radio station welcomes voluntary student participation in its operations and activities and there are. At all the campus locations there are opportunities to socialise in a diverse range of cafes, restaurants and ethnic communities, while shopping at  a range of venues including stalls and markets offers a chance to learn more about the diversity of cultures in the Northern Territory.
